Department Overview


This is in the Welding and 3D Technology Services department of PG&E's Applied Technology Services (ATS) organization. The unit provides welding technical expertise, project consultation, fabrication and inspection oversight, weld program management, development of specialty weld repairs, modifications, inspections, examinations and testing. In addition, the unit supports asset management programs and assists with inspection plans, project engineering, fitness for service, and ASME mechanical design. It also provides 3D laser scanning services for use in piping fabrication, reverse engineering, dimensional control and analysis, as-built documentation, failure analysis and XR simulation applications.



Position Summary


As the Expert Level Welding Engineer, this individual will work as a company expert in the area of welding, materials, fabrication and inspections and provide the different PG&E organizations welding engineering consulting services and support. They'll help manage the PG&E welding programs, support the day to day weld repair and assessment requests, support Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant welding requests, and support the various Hydro-Generation asset management programs. Finally, they'll also help support the development and implementation of new welding, fabrication and weld inspection techniques and technologies.



The work location is in San Ramon, CA. Travel required is 30%.



Job Responsibilities


  • Support the maintenance and management of PG&E welding programs for Diablo Canyon nuclear facility, fossil/hydro-generation and gas operations. This includes updating and revising PG&E procedures to ensure compliance with latest codes and standards, and developing new procedures as required. This also includes developing and qualifying welding procedures for the various weld programs.
  • Provide technical support for welding activities on new equipment installation/design, repair or replacement activities, and fitness-for-service assessments for the various PG&E organizations such as Nuclear, Hydro and Fossil Generation, Electric Operations and Gas Operations.
  • Support welding procedure and weld repair development for the fossil and hydro-generation organization on piping, penstock, runners and similar components.
  • Work with internal clients to develop and implement new welding technology for welding, repairing, fabrication and inspecting components for power plant, gas transmission, and substation components, parts and structures related to electric power generation and gas and electric distribution and transmission.
  • Manage and coordinate small and large welding and inspection related projects for electric power generation and gas and electric distribution and transmission.
  • Prepare presentations, reports and proposals for field projects, development work or potential new business.
  • Provide welding consulting services to internal and external clients.
  • Support review, revisions and development of PG&E and ATS procedures and standards.


Qualifications


Minimum:


  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering with emphasis on related/assigned discipline (i.e., mechanical, civil or electrical engineering, etc.).
  • Job-related experience, 7 years.


Desired:


  • 10 years experience working as a welding engineer, with a minimum of 5 years experience working on licensed nuclear facilities, or fossil/hydro-generation power plants or gas transmission pipelines.
  • Candidate shall have experience in developing and qualifying welding procedures and performing welder qualifications and managing a company's welding program.
  • Candidate shall be familiar with most common NDE methods such as VT, PT, MT, UT and RT and shall have some experience interpreting radiographic images.
  • Candidate shall be familiar with most common arc welding processes (as a minimum GTAW, SMAW, GMAW, FCAW), brazing and soldering and knowledgeable in orbital machine welding systems such as Arc Machines, Liburdi Dimetrics, or similar equipment.
  • Candidate shall have experience in developing repairs for piping and vessels.
  • Candidate shall be familiar with ASME Codes, specifically ASME Sections III, IX and XI, B31.1, B31.3, API 5L and 1104 and AWS D1.1.
  • Current AWS CWI certification
  • Candidate shall have experience project managing welding and /or NDE related projects where they have demonstrated the ability to direct others, coordinate work activities, develop and track a project schedule and manage a budget.
  • Willingness to work overtime to support plant outages and field work
  • Working proficiency with software such as AutoCAD, Solidworks, Pro/E , Polyworks, Creo Design, Design-X or other similar software.
  • Good writing skills and the ability to generate company procedures, specifications and guidelines relating to welding, fabrication and inspections.

Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
